Bhupen Hazarika

My husband's voice floated over the phone ' Bhupen hazarika is no more'-- I woke up from my afternoon siesta and started crying. Generations of assamese like me knew nobody's voice and songs like those of Bhupen Hazarika--affectionately called Bhupenda across all ages. The deep romantic songs like bimurta mur nishati,tumi biyar nisha, patriotic songs like aah aah ulaai aah and so many songs to touch every genre of modern assamese music. He was not just a musician he was a cultural icon who shone through all controversies and ups and downs of his life with sheer brightness of his genius personality. It will take another era of cultural revolution to give birth to another personality of his stature in our state.May his soul rest in peace.
